Environment
In June 2006 the Diocesan Synod set up the Environment Working Group to encourage PCCs and deaneries to engage with the issue of global warming, ‘theologically, scientifically and practically’.
In the report Sharing God’s Planet – a Christian Vision for a Sustainable Future the General Synod reminds us that as Christians we have a responsibility to act. Firstly this means to act with regard to our own lifestyles, individually and corporately and secondly to play an active role with regard to the national and international debate, speaking out and lobbying where we can.
We can help!
There is a team of people available to meet with leaders and congregations of churches in the Diocese to help them devise and develop their environmental policies and to put them into place.
The group is encouraging parishes to switch to green energy, to assess the impact of their energy use, and to work towards being recognised as Ecocongregations. A bulk purchase scheme has been negotiated with Ecotricity by the Dioceses in the South West of England and this may help make a switch to green electricity more attractive for churches, church halls, and parsonages.

'Shrug culture' over climate change challenged
Shrinking the Footprint
Shrinking the Footprint is the national Church of England strategic campaign to enable its members and institutions to address - in faith, practice and missions the pressing issue of climate change. It aims to challenge, encourage and support the whole body of the church to shrink our environmental footprint and reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to 40% of 1990 levels by 2050.
