Gypsies and Travellers
Gypsies and Travellers form the largest minority ethnic groups in our area and they have long traditions of nomadic life throughout Dorset and Wiltshire and into our neighbouring counties.
Gypsies and Travellers also tend to have a strong sense of Christian faith and appreciate the ministry offered to them by clergy and others in many of our parish churches.
From time to time there are points of confrontation between Gypsies and Travellers and those who live in settled communities. An appreciation of the cultural and religious traditions of Gypsies and Travellers can therefore be important for all those who minister among them. The Diocese of Salisbury has recognised this need in the much-appreciated pioneering ministry of the Revd Roger Redding, Chaplain to Gypsies, Travellers and Showmen in the South West of England.
Roger offers training for clergy and others who may be working with Gypsies and Travellers, is involved with the Great Dorset Steam Fair, travels around the Southwest of England with Gypsies and Travellers, and can help with mediation when when the needs and wishes of Gypsies and Travellers give rise to tensions in local parishes.
