Tim Flatmans' Sudan Prayer Mission

My name’s Tim Flatman. I’ve just come back from Sudan, where I spent 3 months as a cross between a missionary, political activist and freelance diplomat! If you have a heart for Sudan, or you would like to know more about this troubled region and the challenges it faces over the next few months, I would love to come and pray with you, or perhaps address a meeting at your church or organisation. Love & solidarity - Tim

Please note that Tim is not a member of the Sudan Link Committee and operates completely on his own.

Tim FlatmanWhat did I do in Sudan?

I travelled around Juba, Rumbek, Wau, Malakal, Abyei and Kadugli
conducting interviews with hundreds of people including senior
politicians, community leaders, civil society and others about possible
scenarios following the referendum and how the international
community should assist; worked with churches from nearly every
major denomination assisting leaders through preaching, teaching &
mission work; & worked with civil society including universities &
civil associations to educate, advise and build capacity.

What am I doing now?

I have committed to spend the next 7 months in prayer, to encourage
others & provide resources to pray for Sudan and campaign for the UK
government to take steps which, based on my conversations in Sudan
and prayer, I believe will foster peace and development in Sudan,
especially the South. I am not working for an organisation but
following a personal calling and living by faith, as I was doing while in
 Sudan.

What can I offer you?

I can lead prayers for Sudan, address your congregation, or speak to a
midweek meeting. Equally I would love just to come and pray
informally with anyone who has a similar burden for Sudan. If you
would like to utilise me in any way, or would simply be willing to
spend time in prayer with me, then get in touch.

Who am I?

I am a church member at Cosham Baptist Church, Portsmouth,
originally from Wakefield in West Yorkshire. I was baptised in 1997
& have had a burden for Sudan since around that time. I worked
with a church of Sudanese refugees in Bucharest on short-term
mission, and briefly visited South Sudan in 2004. My career
background is in political campaigning.

 Why pray now?

Casual observers might think the time to focus prayer on Sudan has passed – that the most important time was immediately prior to and during the referendum.

Friends of Sudan will know that the hardest challenges are yet to come, with issues like the status of Abyei, border demarcation and resource-sharing to be resolved as the South transitions to independence.

Despite recent assurances from the President of the Government of Sudan, there are still many people who think the North will use these issues to try and frustrate recognition of an independent South, and there is an ever-present danger of violence in contested areas, especially Abyei where scores of people were killed during the referendum and where the threat of genocide still looms.

Even after separation the South will face severe challenges in areas including unity, security, and development. Christians in the North face the threat of the return of Sharia law.

Sudan needs your attention & prayer as much now as it ever has.
