Churches Prepare to Party
Refresh2012, the team of church members from across Weymouth and Portland, is preparing to celebrate the Olympic season in style by putting on their ‘Refresh on the Beach’ Bank Holiday Festival (24-27 August).
The team will create a fenced area, able to take up to 3,800 people, on Weymouth Beach. Each day there will be tents with activities for children and adults alike, such as face painting, circus skills and balloon modelling. Bouncy castles, sumo wrestling and an arena for fun sport activities are also planned.
A stage will be erected at the Pavilion end of the beach. Various music and dance groups are planned during the day. In the evenings, the programme features various singers, bands, dancers and short talks given by international speaker Andrew Palau.
Confirmed performers include LZ7, Evergreen, Omega Project, Crossfya and clergy rockers Dogs without Collars. On Sunday, 26 August (11am) the ‘Great Big Worship Event’ will be led by Evergreen.
Bedouin-style tents will be provided for those needing a rest and refreshments, with hand and foot massages also available.
The Bishop of Sherborne, Dr Graham Kings, said: “It’s been a fantastic Games and the best may be yet to come. Our athletes’ achievements will stay in our memories for a long time, and this will be a good moment to celebrate together.”
Refresh2012 Co-ordinator Anni Douglas said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to bring all this together. With the Olympics over and the Paralympics to come, we’re looking forward to having a good time on the Beach. Everyone’s welcome: come and join in!”
