Countdown to the Games
Parishes across Dorset and Wiltshire are preparing to enjoy the Olympic Games this week, ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday (27 July).
Pioneer Minister Becky Sedgwick leads an ‘Olympics Messy Church’ at St James Southbroom on Wednesday 25 July, with creative, all-age activities, games and fun.
On Thursday 26 July (10.15am), Shillingstone Church Centre will host ‘Going for Gold’, an Olympic-themed holiday club for 5 to 11 year olds with an Awards Ceremony open to parents and carers at 4pm, followed by a barbecue.
Christ Church Warminster kick off their events on Friday 27 July with an ‘Opening Olympic Ceremony Celebration’ featuring games and activities for children, a free barbecue and a big screen for watching the opening ceremony. The parish will then run an ‘On Your Marks Holiday Club’ for 5 to 11 year olds (30 July-3 August).
The ‘Refresh2012’ church events in Weymouth also begin on the 27th with Bedouin-style tents on Weymouth Beach, developing into a range of activities supported by all the churches in Weymouth.
The Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Holtam, will lead an Olympic-themed Act of Worship on BBC Radio 4 Long Wave on Friday (9.45-10am), marking the opening of the Games, and will bless the sea at Weymouth Harbour at the end of a 10.15am service on Sunday morning (29 July).
He said, “It’s good to see a variety of events for children and families. The Torch Relay showed us that the Olympic Spirit is alive and well in our diocese.”
The Bishop of Sherborne, Dr Graham Kings, will visit the Kids Club at St John’s Weymouth on Tuesday 31 July, spend the afternoon of Thursday 2 August at the Bedouin tents on Weymouth Beach and attend the Paul Jones and Fiona Hendry music and chat show at Weymouth Baptist on Saturday 4 August (7.30pm).
He said, “The Church is hospitable and open to all, as we welcome athletes, visitors and media from around the world.”
Olympics Co-ordinator Anni Douglas said, “More Than Gold tells us that there is more church support for this Olympic Games than for any other in history. After months of planning, the moment is almost here and it’s time for us to shine.”
