The Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE), formed in 1830, is one of the oldest formal diocesan bodies. Many of our schools were founded before that date, and the Board, or Council as it was called then, was formed to support their work and to promote new schools.

Putting children, young people and families at the heart of our mission

How we can help

SDBE serves God in all aspects of the Church's educational work, enabling people to develop spiritually, morally, socially and intellectually according to the beliefs of the Christian faith. Church schools, children’s and youth work are seen as central to the church’s mission, along with those in continuing education.

SDBE seeks not only to fulfil its statutory duties, and monitor standards, but also to nurture and develop all involved in the life of its schools and parishes.

SDBE Offers:

  • Support and advice on developing children and young people’s spirituality, personal, social, cultural and moral education
  • Resources for teachers and governors, children and youth workers
  • Training, centrally and locally, and sometimes in conjunction with LAs and other dioceses
  • Guidance on developing a Christian ethos and a Christian perspective on all aspects of school and parish life for young people
  • Pastoral and professional support for church schools in all aspects of school leadership, management and governance
  • Pastoral and professional support for all those involved with children and youth work
  • Support and advice on Religious Education, Collective Worship and Inspection
  • Advice on buildings and trusts (Voluntary Aided)
