Diaries of Reflection
'Diaries of Reflection' is a flexible alternative approach to classroom based collective worship. Pupils keep a personal journal or diary in which they reflect through word or art on a number of weekly themes.
Download them from the 'Resources' box on the left, under 'In This Section'.
This develops lifelong skills of personal journaling but also contributes to the pupil’s social and emotional learning. It provides opportunities for pupils Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural development (SMSC). With the new ofsted framework focusing on provision for Spiritual development all schools may find this approach helpful !
Links are made to SEAL and from year two onwards to the Rights Respecting Schools programme from UNICEF.
This approach works well with pupils at KS2 and KS3 but can also be used effectively with KS1 where the keeping of a floor book style class diary is recommended.
Developed and piloted originally in Church schools in this diocese this resource is adaptable to be used with pupils of all faiths and none in both Church and Community schools. I would like to thank Clare Tantrum of St Marys’ Middle School Puddletown and Liz Wesley Barker of Durweston Primary School for their work in originating and developing this resource.
The diaries are available in a downloadable word document format to allow you to personalise for your school context. They can be downloaded week by week or by term. Alternatively if you can't face downloading you can purchase the whole years worth on a memory stick (along with policies etc) for £10.
A staff meeting length training package is available to help launch this in your school. A Powerpoint that could be the focus of a staff meeting is available to down load on the left. Or I can come and lead a staff meeting etc if you wish. Contact me for more information.
The reflections mentioned in the diaries are available on YouTube. Type dholloway1000 into the search engine and they should appear.
This resource has been developed by teachers for teachers; every effort has been made to avoid infringing copyright but if you think we have may have inadvertently done so please contact me.
They lean on the web, but it gives way; they cling to it, but it does not hold.
