Spiritual and Moral

In this section you will find guidance and resources to support the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development of children and young people in Church Schools

It's now widely accepted that the personal development of pupils spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn and to achieve. The diocese supports developments such as SEAL and the Rights Respecting Schools project.

In addition we seek to specifically resource church schools as they develop opportunites for their pupils' Spiritual Development.

NEW for 2012 Guidance on Spirituality in Schools

In response to the new Ofsted inspection framework we have produced guidance and support for schools on providing opportunities for pupils Spiritual Development. These resources have been developed working with the Cathedral Education Centre (Wren Hall) and with Andrew Rickett and experienced SIAS inspector who has been able to draw on best practice observed.

Whilst Ofsted is concerned with Provision and Promotion of opportunities for Spiritual Development we believe that in Church schools at least there should be an element of Progression in those opportunities.

The resources in the box to your left contains the progression in Spirituality Grids. This is a way of auditing Provision, Promotion and Progression, both and exemplar and a blank grid is provided. These should be used in conjunction with the guidance Spirituality policy which will explain their use.

Love and Sex Matters

To help schools provide appropriate Sex Education within the context of church school values, we have developed the Love and Sex Matters resource. For more information please click here.

The Diocese of Salisbury considers this aspect of the curriculum particularly important in church schools because we start from the premise that ‘we're all made in the image of God’ and that 'Every Child Matters to God'.

Spiritual Gardens

We have worked with several of our schools to develop their Spiritual Garden and together produced our Spiritual Garden Information Leaflet which offered help to those wanting to embark on such a project. In our Resources section on the left (under 'In this section') you will find this leaflet and a Powerpoint charting Cerne Abbas Primary school’s spiritual garden project.
