DIY and Doing it Well
Local Lay Ministry and Worship
Last weekend we had a great experience of exploring and finding where local leadership and people taking responsibility can really make a difference.
Saturday saw me joining the Energised Local Ministry steering group meeting near Shaftesbury. We were there to continue to develop a pattern of enabling local church communities take on responsibility for pastoral care, learning and training, and developing models of mission and evangelism that gives energy not only to the congregation, but the wider community.
It was a very positive meeting, with our pilot benefices across the Diocese swapping developments and ideas, and preparing the ground for more work in the future,
Sunday, found me joining a congregation at West Knoyle, for one of their regular DIY services. I didn't know what to expect, and I'm sure they thought I would do something if asked. They did, and I asked them to carry on exactly as if it was a normal Sunday for them. Two Churchwardens divided up the duties, one led the first half, the other, the second. Readings were read, and a helpful thought for the day was offered by one member. We prayed, we sang [an amzing digitial piano/hymn player - I know it's not the same as an organist - but my goodness - we sang!] and shared news amongst ourselves after the service. Brilliant!
