Bespoke CPD course: Developing Spirituality across the Curriculum - 28/04/22

Spiritual development is important for human flourishing and mental wellbeing – come and work on building your school curriculum to provide opportunities for growth in this element of learning.

Spiritual development is important for human flourishing and mental wellbeing – come and work on building your school curriculum to provide opportunities for growth in this element of learning.
Spirituality is a key area for nurturing and developing within everyone. It can impact deeply on an individual’s life, character, faith and beliefs. In the church school context it can also make a powerful contribution to the school’s Christian distinctiveness.

For spiritual development to be the most meaningful and effective it needs to be part of a pupil’s holistic education. A school needs to develop a shared interpretation of spirituality and ensure that opportunities for developing spirituality are planned for throughout school life. A Church of England school has a particular responsibility for growing this within its Christian context.

This day will include a focus upon:
• Models of spiritual development
• The importance of schools developing a shared interpretation of spirituality
• Spirituality and the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) Evaluation Schedule
• Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC) within a Church of England context and as inspected under Ofsted
• How spiritual development links with Religious Education (RE), other curriculum areas and Collective Worship
• Progression in spiritual development

The course will give a brief overview of the requirements of Ofsted as well as SIAMs in the development of spirituality across the Curriculum. Attendees will receive guidance, resources and helpful nationally recognised models to enable them to lead a review and to secure a ‘whole school’ definition of Spirituality in their school. Time will be given for attendees to experience moments of reflection, to look at resources and to carry out curriculum planning.

Attendees should bring:
• a laptop with current curriculum plans for their chosen year group/key stage
• a physical example of the resources and one or two outcomes from a lesson/module relating to spirituality that can be shared
