Of Water and the Spirit

This day is for all those who participate in the Church’s ministry of baptism, whether as officiating ministers or as those involved in baptism preparation and follow up. How do we interpret the baptismal liturgy meaningfully, both for the parents and godparents of infant candidates and for those approaching baptism as adults? And how do we enable it to speak to those who are already members of Christ’s body in a way that deepens faith and renews commitment? Focusing particularly on the Decision, the Promises, and the symbols of light, water and oil, we will explore this rite of initiation that is both familiar and challenging.

Tom Clammer has been a rural parish priest, and more recently Canon Precentor of Salisbury Cathedral. He is now a freelance theologian, educator and spiritual accompanier. His doctorate focused on the Church of England’s theology of evil.
