The Diocese of Salisbury has welcomed today’s announcement of the appointment of Bishop Sarah Mullally as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury.
Read the statements from all our Bishops and a prayer for the Right Revd Right Hon Dame Sarah Mullally's new ministry.
The Bishop of Sherborne, Rt Revd Karen Gorham, said:
“I am delighted that after 10 years of women bishops in the Church of England, we have the first female Archbishop of Canterbury. Bishop Sarah brings much wisdom, care, experience and organisational skills to the role. We look forward to working with her as she leads the church onto its next stage. As a former Canon Treasurer of Salisbury Cathedral, Sarah takes on this significant task with the love and prayers of this diocese.”
The Bishop of Ramsbury, Rt Revd Andrew Rumsey said:
“I am truly glad to hear the news that Sarah Mullally has been appointed as the next Archbishop of Canterbury. This is a historic moment for The Church of England and the Anglican Communion, and Bishop Sarah will give wise and Godly leadership to both. In unsettled times for our country, we need a steady, compassionate and confident Christian voice in public life. I know Bishop Sarah will bring these qualities to this ancient role, and all our prayers will be with her.”
