The Bishop of Sherborne, Dr Graham Kings, has opened a £1.8m project, the St Aldhelm Church Centre in Weymouth.

£1.8m Church Centre Opens

The Bishop of Sherborne Dedicates the Aldhelm Centre with the Rural Dean, Ian Hobbs

Dr Kings dedicated the new Centre at a service earlier this month. Local councillors, those who designed the facility or who worked on the construction site and several hundred local residents also attended. This was followed by a free Pig Roast funded by the church to celebrate the event and for the enjoyment of the local community.

The Centre will provide a wide range of 21st century facilities and enable further community work in Radipole.

The project was largely funded by a Christian local charity specifically set up for the provision of Church halls in Radipole. The congregation is committed to finding £170,000 of the cost.

Dr Kings said, “Congratulations to all involved in this pioneering project. This is an encouraging day of celebration for the whole community in Radipole, Weymouth. As we look forward to welcoming visitors for the Olympics, the centre will be well-used for church work and for the benefit of the community.”

The Rural Dean of Weymouth and Portland, Revd Ian Hobbs, said, “The Centre is named after St Aldhelm, a Bishop who was a man of the people and a great communicator. This is what the Centre is about: a place for parishioners to gather with the wider community, to minister to their needs and strike up friendships so that our great message of hope can spread further afield.”
