A message from the Bishop of Sherborne

Bishop Christopher Herbert

Dr Christopher Herbert

As you know, Dr Christopher Herbert has been acting as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Delegate in the Diocese since the start of December, and has been guiding us through our Episcopal vacancy through regular visits and from his home in Farnham.

I am sorry to tell you that, after a bout of illness at Easter (from which he has made a good recovery), +Christopher’s doctor has recommended that he step down from his duties with immediate effect. Archbishop Rowan has accepted this advice, and has appointed me as his Delegate in place of +Christopher.

Along with our Bishop-designate Nick Holtam and me, the Bishop’s Staff are extremely grateful to +Christopher for the huge amount of time and effort he has generously given to us, and in particular have valued his sound advice, wisdom and the benefit of his wide experience. We wholeheartedly support his need to withdraw from further duties, both to recover fully and to guard his future health.

We will of course find a suitable opportunity in the near future to thank him properly and publicly, but in the meantime, I am sure you will wish to remember +Christopher and Jan in your prayers, especially as they await the birth of another grandchild in July.

+Graham
