Bishop Inspired by Visit to South Sudan *Updated

by Michael Ford last modified 05 Mar, 2013 12:23 PM

The Bishop of Sherborne, Dr Graham Kings, has released footage from his recent visit to Malakal, South Sudan (14-24 February). Dr Kings led a week of clergy Bible studies at the invitation of the Bishop of Malakal, Hilary Garang, participated in local celebrations and outreach events, and enjoyed his time with Archbishop Daniel Deng in Juba.

Dr Kings answered a series of questions afterwards.

What were the highlights of the visit for you?
The people’s vibrant joy in Christ now they are liberated with their own country; prayer for those still being bombed in the Nuba Mountains by the Republic of Sudan; delight in the friendship of Bishop Hilary, who is a creative artist; and the South Sudanese insights into Scripture.

What did you say or do that really hit home with them?
We explored 18 Bible passages together, from Genesis to Revelation, on the topic of ‘mission’. The Word of God has a life of its own and we enjoyed using role-play on three of the passages. The row between Paul and Peter in Antioch in Galatians 2 was particularly powerful.

What did you learn over there that you will apply over here?
The importance of role-play in group work on the Scriptures; insights into biblical culture, such as the importance of genealogies and respect for the elderly; and above all, exuberance in worship!

Is this the start of a new level of partnership?
Yes, together with the three recent visits from Purbeck, Wimborne and Poole Deaneries, relationships are growing in this 40th year of our link with the Episcopal Church of Sudan.

You’re playing football in the second YouTube clip. How did that come about?
I was engaging with young people in the town who don't come to church. Football is a great communicator!

Did you have a go on the drums?
I did have a go, but I need more practice...
