Bishop Nicholas makes his maiden speech as the House of Lords, focusing on disability, the environment... and the Holy Spirit

Bishop Nicholas today made his maiden speech in the House of Lords. The full text of the speech is available through this link.

Bishop is Nicholas is the Church of England’s lead on the environment and also Chairs its Committee for Ministry with and among Deaf and Disabled People. His maiden speech focused on climate change, welfare reform and Magna Carta, as well as referencing Salisbury’s longstanding links with Sudan and South Sudan.

The Holy Spirit played a significant role in the speech as well.

Speaking after the speech, Bishop Nicholas said, “It was an honour to make my maiden speech as a Lord Spiritual today. To sit as a Lord Spiritual in the House is a serious piece of public work, which we undertake on behalf of the whole community, not just those who are Christians or Church of England.

“The role of Lords Spiritual is distinctive, and non-partisan in a political process. We take the long view when the pressures are often to the short-term.”
