The Right Revd Nicholas Holtam, the Bishop of Salisbury, has expressed his delight as the birth of the new Prince of Cambridge.

Bishop Nicholas said:

“With everyone in the Diocese of Salisbury I am delighted to hear of the safe arrival of the Prince of Cambridge. Congratulations and every good wish to his parents.

“We prayed for him at the cathedral this morning and I am sure prayers will be offered throughout the Diocese for God's many blessings on his new life and on them as a new family.”

The Church of England has issued a prayer for the royal baby:

God our Creator,
who knows each of us by name
and loves us from all eternity:
we give you thanks for new life and human love.
Bless William and Catherine
as they welcome their son into the world.
Give them patience and wisdom
to cherish and love him as he grows.
Surround the family with the light of hope
and the warmth of your love today and always;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
