Church School Wins Regional Award *Updated
Durweston CE VA Primary School, Dorset, is the South West and Wales Primary regional winner in the Church School Awards 2012. Ten regional winners were announced in total.
Schools from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland were asked to describe what ‘nurturing global citizenship’ and ‘fostering community cohesion’ meant to them, and how those principles were embedded in school life.
The regional prizes will be awarded at a gala event, with a national winner in each of the Primary and Secondary phases drawn from these regional winners.
Durweston's Head Teacher, Liz Wesley-Barker, said, "We're overjoyed to receive this honour. Our staff and governors work hard to ensure that our children have the best possible education and grounding in life skills."
She added, "Through local community initiatives and child initiated fund raising for projects both near and far, children at Durweston know they have a voice and that some action is better than none, however big a problem or challenge may seem. We aim to show empathy not sympathy and recognise that love acted out can transform our communities."
The Gala, hosted by Children's TV presenter Kirsten O'Brien, will take place at Methodist Church House, London, on the afternoon of Thursday 28 June. VlPs, sponsors and partners of the Church School Awards will present the schools with their prizes.
The Durweston children themselves will do a 3-min presentation on behalf of their school.
