Funding Hope for mission

by Michael Ford last modified 23 Apr, 2021 08:27 PM

Setting up a new church plant can give parishes a few financial nightmares, but thanks to the Aldhelm Mission Fund, this wasn’t the case for Hope Church.

Hope Church, based in the Old Sarum and Longedge estates, began when St Francis Church sent a small group of families and individuals from its congregation to start a new church just up the road in 2019.

Their mission was to build a new community of worshippers, but to do this they needed to let people know they were there, and then have the equipment they needed for worship.

They applied to the Diocese's Aldhelm Mission Fund, which specifically encourages and resources creative thinking and risk-taking, helping to fund new work and projects that connect the local church to the wider community, but cannot be funded from local sources.

The Fund gave Hope Church a grant of £4,000 to help with publicity items, banners, and components of a sound system that included a mixing desk, microphone and a laptop.

The Aldhelm Mission Fund places the emphasis on supporting projects in new areas of work and providing some of the resources needed to try different types of mission in our parishes. So it is not intended to be used for building projects, administrative or parish youth worker posts.

Since 2006, the Fund has supported over 100 local mission initiatives with recent awards ranging from £500 to £24,000.
