Play Your Cards Right

by ajack last modified 01 Dec, 2021 04:10 PM

The overall goal of COP26 was to carve a path to keep global warming limited to 1.5C and avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Hear from Anne Wilson and Sandra Gamble, who set up an eco column in West Lavington parish magazine last year in anticipation of COP26 and their eco-friendly suggestion this Christmas.

Some notable highlights of the COP26 event included leaders from over 100 countries (representing 85% of the world's forests) promised to stop deforestation by 2030. A scheme to cut 30% of current methane emissions by 2030 was agreed by more than 100 countries and it was the first time fossil fuels were discussed at a COP agreement.

Anne and Sandra suggest that this Christmas, we need to act drastically and cut the number of Christmas cards we send to reduce waste.

It is estimated that over a billion Christmas cards are sent each year in the UK, most of which end up being thrown away.

What you can do:

  • Tell friends and family you do not want cards this year

  • If you’re part of a group you could arrange a card for the whole group on a notice board or Facebook page

  • Upcycle old cards as gift tags and cards for next year

  • And of course: recycle as many as possible.

  • Use the money saved on cards as a donation to your favourite charity
