Praying for Fair Weather

by Michael Ford last modified 09 Jan, 2014 01:06 PM

With floods affecting much of Dorset and Wiltshire, many are seeking respite from howling winds and torrential rain.

Praying for Fair Weather

South Canonry, the Bishop's house in Salisbury, is surrounded by flood waters.

Residents in Bournemouth and Salisbury have been forced from their homes and St Mary the Virgin in Charminster, near Dorchester, has been flooded out. Click here for a Guardian report on Bournemouth and here for the BBC's Charminster report

The Environment Agency has issued Severe Flood Warnings along the coast at Preston Beach, in Lodmore, Weymouth and Chiswell, near Portland Harbour, where sea defences were breached last night by the 'Hercules' storm. Click here for the BBC's report on Portland and Poole and here for the Independent's report on Chiswell

There is also an increased risk of flooding in Cranborne in east Dorset, along the River Stour and in Salisbury. The threat of flooding still remains in Bradford on Avon, Malmesbury and Melksham. Click here for a report from This Is Wiltshire

In Salisbury itself, a small number of properties in the Cathedral Close has been evacuated due to very high water levels on the Avon, while the Bishop’s house, South Canonry, is almost entirely surrounded by water.

The Environment Agency is supporting local authorities as they respond to reports. Communities are being urged to remain prepared for more flooding while rain continues to fall for the rest of the week.

From the Book of Common Prayer

O Almighty Lord God, who for the sin of man didst once drown all the world, except eight persons, and afterward of thy great mercy didst promise never to destroy it so again:
We humbly beseech thee, that although we for our iniquities have worthily deserved a plague of rain and waters, yet upon our true repentance thou wilt send us such weather, as that we may receive the fruits of the earth in due season;
and learn both by thy punishment to amend our lives, and for thy clemency to give thee praise and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
