Priests Fly Out to Sudan

The Rector of Blandford Forum, the Revd Tim Storey, and the Priest in Charge of Salisbury St Mark, Revd Jim Findlay, fly out to South Sudan on Tuesday (9 October) for a month-long placement in Bishop Ngalamu College, Mundri, in a remote area of Sudan.

The visit was first suggested by the Diocesan Sudan Link at the end of 2011 as a way to strengthen the link between the Diocese and the Episcopal Church of Sudan through training Church leaders at the small college, about one hundred miles from the capital, Juba.

The Sudan Link intends that this pioneering visit will lead to further involvement in the future from other pairs of clergy in the Salisbury Diocese. As well as teaching at the College, the clergy will be visiting other Churches in the area.

Revd Storey said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in encouraging the Church leaders in South Sudan and to engage with another country and culture. By going ourselves, rather than simply donating some money, means that we can discover more about ourselves and our own faith as well as helping others to grow in theirs.”

Revd Findlay said, “We’re thrilled at the prospect of going to South Sudan, but it’s also important to say that we are not going as those who have all the answers. My previous experiences in Africa suggest we'll return having received much more than we've been able to give.  Tim and I are the privileged ones, being enabled by our parishes and our Diocese to visit our brothers and sisters in Christ in Mundri.  It's our prayer that this trip will lead to a deepening of those relationships.”

Every Diocese in the Church of England has a link with another Diocese in the Anglican Communion, but the Diocese of Salisbury is unusual in having a link with the Episcopal Church of the whole province of Sudan, which spans both Sudan and the new country of South Sudan. The Diocese of Salisbury has been linked with the Episcopal Church of Sudan since 1972.
