School's World Record Attempt

Wimborne St Giles CE VA First School will attempt a new world record on Wednesday 8 February (2.45pm) during a national ‘Sign2Sing’ event.

School's World Record Attempt

An 'A' in British Sign Language

SignHealth, a UK charity working to support profoundly deaf children, young people and adults, run the annual events to try and break the world record for the number of people signing and singing the same song at the same time.

Sandra Webster, Foundation and Key Stage 1 teacher and Sing Up co-ordinator at the school, explains:

"We became interested in signing about 10 years ago when John Bentall, a friend of mine, came into school as part of a topic on Communication. Then a few years ago we had a deaf child in our school and our signing had to be developed even further. Although he has since moved on we have continued with our signing albeit limited.

"We are very keen on singing and last year achieved the silver Sing Up Award. This year, we are hoping to complete our submission for the gold Sing Up Award. Being part of the Sign2Sing attempt will be used as evidence.

"The children have only been learning the song since the beginning of term and are making excellent progress. We have invited our parents, governors and friends to join us on the 8th of February. We will also be raising funds for SignHealth."

The Revd John Cowburn, Diocesan Chaplain to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, said, “It's great to hear of schools doing this to raise awareness. SignHealth is an organisation who can widen the possibilities of access to health and other services. It's a worthwhile project and I'm all in favour."

94,489 people participated in February 2011. Over 800 schools have already signed for 2012, and SignHealth hopes to enlist 1,000 schools in time for the record attempt.
