Kickflips for Christ

by ajack last modified 01 Dec, 2021 04:10 PM

Have you heard of The StreetLights Centre? It’s a Christian skateboard park, set up to be a resource for the local community to engage those who don't go to church and to impact skate culture in Wimborne.

In a converted warehouse on an unremarkable industrial estate on the outskirts of Wimborne, you will find something quite unusual; a sign over the door reads  ‘StreetLight Centre, Shining Christ’s Light in the World’, there’s the sound of skateboards crashing onto ramps and the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

The centre was launched in 2014 by a team of local Christians led by Andy Putt, Project Director, as an outreach project focused around an indoor skate park and cafe. From the start, Andy’s vision has been to provide a resource for the local community – a place where families, not just young people, can come and spend time.

There are state of the art facilities for skaters and riders but there’s also a great coffee shop upstairs with big picture windows so that parents can watch their children on the park. But, what’s going on at Christmas?

Here, we catch up with Andy to hear all about what the team have planned.

"Soon at StreetLight, it will be looking very festive. Christmas is such an exciting time of year. It is an amazing opportunity to share Jesus with people. People’s hearts are more open to hear of the good news of Jesus.

This Christmas is very different to last year. Last year we had many restrictions on what we could and could not do.

We want to say a massive thank you for your support in prayer and giving, over the last year. This has meant that we have been able to open our doors once again, following the lockdowns and closures. We are here because God wants us here.

We would love to ask if you would pray with us this Christmas season.

Please pray for:

  • Skaters’ Bible Study - 15 to 18 young people, who don’t know Jesus, meet here every Tuesday and are hearing how awesome He is.
  • Christmas Craft event - 31 parents of our young people, who regularly visit the centre, are coming for a fun evening of wreath making and festive cheer.
  • Christmas Unwrapped - Our ‘carol service’ with skating, cafe, music and a festive talk.
  • Queen Elizabeth’s School carol service online - where I will be sharing the Christmas message of hope.
  • Please also pray for the work going on in the local schools over Christmas and for the team and volunteers at StreetLight.
  • Pray for those who find Christmas not a time of celebration but a really hard time of year.

Once again - thank you so much for your support, prayers and giving. Let’s pray for a great Christmas season where many turn to Jesus. I hope and pray this Christmas is a great one for you and your family.”
