This church is going Wild!

During lockdown, many of us took the opportunity to explore our local area during daily exercise and this, along with awareness of climate and sustainability issues, has inspired fresh thinking.

A number of our parishes are exploring outdoor forms of church.

The Revd Matt Smith, Assistant Curate at St Nicholas Church in Corfe Mullen, is collaborating on a new project with Evie Ford, the parish's new family and children's leader.

Matt says:

"‘Wild Church’ launched this month and is providing a wonderful chance for families to come and explore the Christian faith through the wonders of God’s awesome creation.

"Within a small piece of woodland at the bottom of our church car park, we have been busy clearing nettles in order to provide a fun and enchanting environment where together beneath our huge parachute canopy we can engage actively and creatively with the natural world.

"Our wonderful gathering space will provide a chance for reflection as we learn together through stories from the Bible around our campfire, whilst enjoying breakfast together.

"We hope to learn about the many trees, the seasons and the wildlife that we share this space with and to explore together better ways of caring for God’s wonderful world.

"Activities such as den building, making fire or woodland craft will enable families to work together using various hand tools and also learn new skills, whilst younger children will be able to get their hands dirty in our mud kitchen or become a keen shot with our huge woodland catapult.

"For those who would like some space, our woodland nest swing will allow you to soar through the trees, taking you up towards the canopy far above those who’d like to try their hand at building a bug cathedral or a bat box.

"A great excuse to pull on some old clothes and join us as we embark on a new ‘Wild’ beginning in the life of our church and community."
