Academy Cadets “a credit to their Detachment Commander and themselves”

by Michael Ford last modified 29 Aug, 2014 02:50 PM

Sarum Academy are “so proud” that the Wiltshire Army Cadet Force of the same name have passed their first inspection, and been graded as “up to standard”, having been open barely a year.

The Detachment is led by Captain Jonathan Ball, SSI Zara Price, and 2 civilian adult helpers, Mrs Sue Kilgour and Mr Alex Hudson. The Detachment was inspected by Major Joseph Power, 2IC 14 Regiment Royal Artillery and WO2 Leon Holdridge, Regimental Training Officer.

The report, published in June 2012, states “All the Cadets were confident for their age; polite and engaging. They are a credit to their Detachment Commander and themselves”.

The Sarum Academy Detachment opened in April 2011 by Lieutenant Colonel Mike Valencia of the Royal Artillery.

In the short time since the Detachment opened Cadets have participated in a range of community activities, including memorial parades and fund raising events, and undergone a navigation and long-distance walking expedition in the New Forest to hone their skills.

Major Power says: “This is a very effective, vibrant and thriving Detachment which offers a great deal to its Cadets and Adult Volunteers alike.”

The report summarises by saying: “The young people who attend training nights with this Detachment are very well cared for; they receive high-quality training delivered by knowledgeable Junior Non Commissioned Officer’s; and the future is bright. It was a real privilege to be invited to conduct this inspection on behalf of Comd 43X and I look forward to visiting this Detachment again.”

Ruth Johnson, Sarum Academy Principal, said today: “This great report reflects the vast improvements we are seeing across the Academy as a whole. We are so proud of all the Detachment has achieved and grateful to Wiltshire Army Cadets for supporting us in this way.”

Sarum Academy will see more Academy pupils joining the Cadets in September.
