Kilmington's Charity Den Day

by Michael Ford last modified 05 Oct, 2016 04:09 PM

For their first theme day of the new school year, children at Whitesheet Primary Academy spent an exciting 'Den Day' in the grounds of the Infant Centre at Kilmington.

The finished result!

The children worked in mixed age teams building dens from a wide variety of materials, including tarpaulins, curtains, sticks, pallets, branches from trees and other useful material and objects they could collect or find.

During the day the theme of den building enabled the children to spent time learning all about the lives of refugees - both past and present - and used their dens to reflect on a day in the life of a refugee and how they cope.

Work in progress

At the end of the day the parents were invited to view all the dens. The teams had small pots outside each den for parents to donate money, with the proceeds going to Save the Children.

Headteacher Karen Brooker said, "The activities brought out team work, resilience, patience, practical skills and were designed to give all the children, both big and small, a real sense of achievement.

"The children had a super day and really enjoyed solving problems and then overcoming them. They made some amazing dens - all different and unique to each team.”
