Professional flatland BMX rider and Guinness World Record holder Matti Hemmings recently visited pupils at Whitesheet Primary Academy in Zeals.

The visit was a spectacular finale to the school's ‘Bike-it PLUS’ Ride and Stride Competition. The benefits of cycling had been the subject of posters produced by the children during the competition.

Winners Reuben Hayes, Beth Davis and Florence Gunstone were presented with their individually named banners by Matti displaying their exciting designs.

The champion BMX-er then entertained the school with some amazing stunts and tricks.

After the display, the children got a chance to safely try out some stunts themselves - a fantastic introduction to this exciting sport.

Matti also talked through the ups and downs of BMX-ing.  One child, Ethan exclaimed, “Mattie has helped me realise that learning from your mistakes is very important.”

During the five years (2011-2016) that Bike It Plus ran in Wiltshire, regular cycling to school increased by 11% and levels of regular scooting and skating to school increased by 16%. The number of pupils regularly being driven to school decreased by nearly 10%.
