Laying foundations... building structures

‘Transforming Lives’ is our vision and strategic plan for our work in this core area. It was developed over a number of months with advisers, head teachers and members of the Cathedral Education service. Through our core and bespoke training opportunities we seek to work with you to develop excellence in the delivery of RE in all phases of Primary and Secondary education.

Much discussion and research is currently taking place around the question of what it means to be religiously literate and it is within this current context that we offer the following bespoke training opportunities:

  • What is the purpose of RE? How do we enable informed conversations about religion and belief?
A session to consider the implications of the current debate surrounding the purpose and place of RE within the curriculum. How do we as practitioners encourage pupils to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding ‘to hold an informed conversation about religion and belief’?
  • Mapping the big picture – curriculum design
A practical session to build the long term curriculum map – identifying how a range of resources can be used to support the delivery of a progressive and coherent RE curriculum which encourages religious and theological literacy
  • Embedding ‘Understanding Christianity’
A practical session to assist with the implementation of the teaching and learning approach promoted through this resource
  • Beyond levels – developing new approaches to assessment in RE
This session will consider current practice in terms of assessment within RE and will help you to develop an approach which is consistent with your school approach to assessment across the curriculum
  • School Self Evaluation: RE focus
Time spent working alongside your RE subject leader to audit provision for RE and identify evidence to evaluate the impact
  • Creative teaching and learning strategies for RE
A practical session to explore a range of creative and inspiring teaching and learning strategies to engage pupils in their learning and to deepen knowledge and understanding.

This bespoke work can be undertaken via twilight staff training, TDD, with individual or clusters of schools/ academies. Time can also be purchased for one to one meeting time with the RE leader or with a wider leadership team including governors.
