“I thank our churchwardens for their ministry in this ancient role: for the time they give, responsibility they carry and support they offer, and how, in doing so, they are Making Jesus Known.”
- Bishop Stephen, Bishop of Salisbury
Dating back to the 13th century, the office of churchwarden is an ancient one: since the Reformation, churchwardens have played and continue to play a vital role in the ministry and working life of our church communities.
Across the Diocese of Salisbury, more than 900 churchwardens volunteer to serve their parishes: they support the clergy, represent the laity, care for the fabric and contents of their church and act as officers of the bishop, as well as helping to lead worship, ministry and mission. By caring for our church buildings and the people who gather in them, they play an indispensable role in the life of the Church.
