Preaching on generosity

Everything you need to know about giving and fundraising is already explained in the Bible. Jesus talks about money more than he talks about any other subject, and there is also rich fundraising advice provided in many of St Paul’s letters, including to the Corinthians. Christian love and charity are surely the root of all charitable giving as we know it today.

Contagious Generosity

What if all Christian Discipleship is about giving, whether it’s giving time, money or thanks? How can you create a culture of giving in your church? We love this book, Contagious Generosity by Chris Willard and Jim Sheppard.

You can also read Jim’s generosity blog here and watch this one-hour webinar Cultivating a Generous Church, which covers:

• Leading and discipling your church towards giving

• Having the right mindset around money

• How to increase generosity in the church

• Digital tools and generosity

A Spirituality of Fundraising

Many people might see giving as a financial matter, but we think it sits firmly in mission and ministry. A Spirituality of Fundraising by Henri J M Nouwen is a bite-sized read, which is just as inspirational.

Giving in Grace

The Giving in Grace website provides extensive support to help disciple Christians in the theology of giving. Their free-to-download resources include materials to support Lent courses, Bible study groups, Generosity Week and more.

Building upon a rich tradition of stewardship theology and good practice in the church, it uses key principles to help shape its distinctive blend of biblical teaching and practical action.

Lectionary-based generosity

The Diocese of Rochester produce a lovely resource that encourages us to think about preaching generosity on a weekly basis. It takes national contributions, and you can register for weekly emails – or even submit your own messages.

Holy Habits Gladness and Generosity

Holy Habits: Gladness and Generosity by Andrew Roberts (with Neil Johnson and Tom Milton) is a missional discipleship resource exploring biblical generosity, based on Acts 2:42–47. Part of the BRF Resources Holy Habits series, it encourages churches and individuals to explore gladness and generosity as essential, interconnected Christian disciplines rooted in thankfulness.
