URGENT call to action - Wiltshire and Swindon health and care organisations need extra volunteers

by Michael Ford last modified 22 Jan, 2021 05:44 PM

As a result of Covid-19 the Wiltshire and Swindon health and care organisations have identified an immediate need to increase their workforce in response to Covid-19 pressures.

BSW CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) has now implemented the BSW Central Development Hub. The purpose of the hub is to resource workforce gaps identified by health and care organisations seeking volunteers to support these services at this time.

Shifts we are looking to resource currently:

  • Administrative staff x 399 in Swindon and Bath
  • Medical runners (walkers) x 301 in Swindon and Bath
  • Porters x 84 in Bath
  • Cleaners x 147 in Bath

All of the above are required to cover 7 days a week but are flexible.

These roles currently exist within BSW Health & Care organisations however, at this time employed staff are either being re-purposed for C-19 support or due to an increase in workforce numbers required to ensure that Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 patients continue to receive the best possible care at all times.

We are keen to work with our local voluntary agencies and would like to issue an appeal that suitable volunteers, willing to support our health partners at this time be identified and nominated as soon as possible.

How do we record volunteer information to be matched with requirements?

Here is a deployment nomination form to be completed and returned to at your earliest convenience.

What will happen next
The Deployment hub will ‘match’ the volunteers nominated with the roles currently required by geography, type and availability. Contact details will then be forwarded to the ‘host organisations’ workforce lead who will contact the candidate as soon as possible to discuss the role(s) available and agree start and training details. Please find attached a schematic to clarify.

Commitment from Host organisations for all volunteers
The health and care organisations are committed to ensuring that any 3rd party or volunteer candidates are receive an organisational induction, they will conduct a risk assessment (where necessary) and provide any training required to support their role. At all times candidates will be receive the highest level of Covid-19 protection necessary to include PPE.

Costs incurred by volunteers
BSW CCG are committed to reimburse all volunteers with travel and sustenance costs as follows:

Travel costs:
0.14p per mile to and from place of work

Sustenance (food and refreshments):
Up to 8 hours worked: £5 per working day
Over 8 hours worked: £10 per working day

Please note that expenses must be invoiced by the nominating voluntary sector agency in arrears to include details of name and dates of work completed to the Clinical Commissioning Group finance team for reimbursement with agencies responsible for any tax implications for their volunteers should this be the case.

Re: invoicing address, please let Sarah Kelly know when you require it, via

We understand that nationally there is a great demand on volunteer resources but we hope that with your support, and that of your volunteers we can meet the challenges currently being experienced by the Wiltshire and Swindon health and care providers contributing to the Covid-19 effort for the benefit of us all.
