Volunteer Chaplaincy Co-ordinator - Wiltshire Council

by Michael Ford last modified 07 Oct, 2019 11:36 AM

We are looking for a volunteer Chaplaincy Co-ordinator for Wiltshire Council to take over from the Revd Rob Thomas. This could be a role undertaken by an ordained person wanting to develop a 6th day ministry outside of parish ministry, or a lay person.

The chaplaincy to Wiltshire Council was established in 2011 to provide a confidential listening-ear service to elected members and Council employees. Promoted as a service provided by the churches as an expression of care for the community, it's offered equally to everyone of any religious belief or none. It costs the Council nothing, as we are all volunteers and we (or our churches) bear our own expenses.

Rob Thomas is the licensed chaplain, but the team consists of 15 ordained and lay chaplains of a range of Christian denominations based around the Council hubs in Trowbridge, Chippenham and Salisbury. Chaplains make themselves available in Council premises on a rota that's advertised throughout the Council.

Staff may make appointments confidentially to meet us either on or off the premises according to their preference. When called upon, we minister at public health funerals organised by the Council.

The Council is very supportive of our work, collaborating with us on Christmas carol services, and including us as part of the induction process for all new staff. The licensed chaplain's role is to oversee the service, to liaise with the Council Leader and senior staff, and to arrange recruitment to the team.
