The Diocesan Secretary

David Pain was appointed January 2019 as the Diocesan Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF).

The DBF is a registered charity whose purpose is to serve and resource the churches which make up the diocese, under the episcopal oversight of the bishop. The Diocesan Secretary works with the bishop and Synod to ensure good governance within the institution and legal frameworks of the Church of England.

David’s formative experiences were in church based community development. Living and working with people living with leprosy in India opened his eyes to the role of religion in social exclusion and the transformative love of Mother Theresa’s Sisters.
He trained as a youth worker with the Church of the Province of Southern Africa in the final years of the apartheid regime, working for peace through justice in Archbishop Tutus’ Diocese of Cape Town.

His first post in the Church of England was as Mission Officer in the Diocese of Worcester in the early 1990s. He went on to spend 20 years working for Christian Aid including six years as Head of the Africa programme and latterly as Director responsible for church relationships, campaigns, communications, and fundraising.
David’s father, Michael, was a priest in the Diocese of Salisbury for 30 years serving in Melksham, the Urchfont team, and then in retirement in Bradenstoke and Dorchester.

Outside the Diocese David is Chair of the Board of Traidcraft Exchange.
