SML Younger Youth Weekend Away

Last weekend St Mary's Church, Longfleet (SML) took 47 youth and 14 team away to St George's House in North Devon. The Christian outdoor centre in the quiet village of Georgeham, just 1.5 miles from the stunning coastline, has been a regular venue for the SML Youth weekend away's over the last 20 years with the church having taken hundreds of young people there in that time. It was the second time youth weekend away this academic year, having taken older youth back in October.

The weekend was made up of times of worship, teaching and prayer, helping young people to grow in their relationship with God through reflecting on some of the 'I Am' statements in John's Gospel, however, there was also plenty of free time and activities where the youth could spend time having fun in God's creation. Through big group games, pool, volleyball, conversations, food, a mini-disco/rave and firepits, new friendships were formed and existing friendships were deepened.

On Saturday in the glorious sunshine, an array of activities were put on by the team at St George's House, encouraging the young people to step out of their comfort zone. Whether they did kayaking, surfing or climbing and abseiling, the youth were encouraged to do something new, many trying activities for the first time surrounded by the support and backing of their friends and leaders.

It was an inspiring weekend seeing friendships, resilience and confidence grow as the young people gathered together to be built up and challenged in a fun, safe environment. It was amazing to watch as the youth group worshipped and prayed together, spending time in the presence of God, with some giving their lives to Him for the first time.

Rob Sallis, Youth Pastor at SML, said 'I hope this time cements God’s truth that will stay with them for a lifetime. I hope this encourages all to continue to create spaces and opportunities for all young people to make Jesus known.'
